The County Ground was a cricket ground in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1885, when Staffordshire played Derbyshire in a non first-class match.[1]
The County Ground played host to a number of first-class matches during its existence. The first first-class match played on the ground came in 1886 when an England XI played the touring Australians. Two years later in 1888, the fixture was repeated. In 1890, a Staffordshire XI played a single first-class match against the touring Australians. The next first-class match came 22 years later when a combined Minor Counties team played the touring South Africans. The same sides played out the final first-class fixture held on the ground in 1929.[2]
In 1895, Staffordshire played Northamptonshire in the grounds first Minor Counties Championship match. Staffordshire used the ground from: 1895-1914, 1922-1927 and finally in 1936. The ground hosted 77 Minor Counties Championship matches, the last of which saw Staffordshire play Durham.[3]
The ground is now underneath the new Stoke-on-Trent College complex.
